Duluth-area correctional center gets new superintendent

Kathy Trihey has been named superintendent of the 150-bed minimum security facility starting Friday.

Warren Salmela, the longtime superintendent of the Northeast Regional Corrections Center outside Duluth, is retiring today after 38 years of service with Arrowhead Regional Corrections.

Kathy Trihey has been named superintendent of the 150-bed minimum security facility starting Friday. Trihey previously served as superintendent of the Arrowhead Juvenile Center, another division of Arrowhead Regional Corrections. She has been with ARC for 39 years.

Arrowhead Regional Corrections is a consortium of Carlton, Cook, Koochiching, Lake and St. Louis counties that pools resources for corrections efforts.

Salmela began his career at NERCC in 1975, working as a teacher. He was promoted to education supervisor in 1980 and has served as superintendent since 1998.

The corrections center is located in Saginaw and offers education, vocational training, treatment, recreation and medical services to adult males who are sentenced to the facility.
