Rep. Erik Simonson, DFL-Duluth, has introduced two gun-related bills and signed on as co-sponsor for others.

“I have heard from many, many, many people in the last few days,” the first-year lawmaker said, about evenly split on the two sides of the issue.

One bill would penalize people who own body armor without a permit, other than law enforcement officers. The other would allow police chiefs, as well as sheriffs, to issue concealed-carry permits.

Simonson’s bills could be heard by a committee later this week.

He also is co-sponsor of bills to ban assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines.

Simonson said he is listening to gun-related testimony before deciding how he will vote.

The Public Safety Committee is expected to compile an overall bill dealing with gun law changes.
