Hill-Murray School head football coach Mark Mauer, who was charged with soliciting prostitution last week, has resigned, school officials confirmed this week.

Mauer was arrested Feb. 19 at a Fridley hotel during a police sting. Mauer reportedly met with an undercover officer posing as a prostitute and offered her $100 in exchange for “full service,” according to Fridley police.

Mauer, 54, of Woodbury was one of 19 men arrested. He was cited with a misdemeanor.

School officials said in an e-mail Tuesday that Mauer “has resigned his positions of Major Gift Officer and of head football coach at Hill-Murray School.”

Mauer was in his first year as coach at the Maplewood-based Catholic prep school.

He is a former St. Paul Harding High School and University of Nebraska quarterback who played in the 1982 Orange Bowl.

Mauer previously was the head coach at Concordia University of St. Paul. He stepped down after the 2010 season to pursue business interests, ending seven years at the school.

He also had previously coached at Wisconsin, New Mexico State, Ball State and North Dakota State.

Mauer worked at the family business, Mauer Chevrolet in Inver Grove Heights, for a year before being offered a job at Hill-Murray. He accepted the job in May — his first high school coaching position.

He did not return a call for comment Tuesday.
