Robert “String” D. Baldwin, 65, of Janesville, died on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Mercy Hospital & Trauma Center, Janesville.

Robert “String” D. Baldwin, 65, of Janesville, died on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Mercy Hospital & Trauma Center, Janesville.

He was born in Pittsburgh, Penn., on Aug. 17, 1947, the son of Rose E. Hatcher and Robert D. Baldwin.

He married Katherine Ziegler Wyss in Duluth, on Dec. 8, 1983.

String was passionate about creating fantasy art, performing in Community Theater, and living life through music. Bob worked for the City of Duluth as a city planner and was founding director of Neighborhood Housing Services of Freeport, Ill. Bob retired as the Diversity Specialist for the Janesville School District in 2011.

Bob was a tireless educator and advocate for issues related to diversity, equality, and social justice. He challenged everyone to make a difference . He joined his good friend Santo Carfora as diversity, anti-racism trainer. He served as NAACP President- Duluth Chapter and was a co-founder of Men as Peacemakers. Bob was enormously proud of his amazing children and adored his grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; and two siblings, Timothy and Sylvia Hatcher.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kate, of Janesville; seven children: Derek (Lori) Baldwin of Minnesota, Bliss (Foster) Peterson of Georgia, Jennifer Wyss of Minnesota, Jason Baldwin of Minnesota, Matthew Wyss of Minnesota, Andrea (Andrew) Knutson of Minnesota and Sara Baldwin of Washington DC; nine grandchildren: Jordan, Carter, Hunter, Jack, Henry, Gray, Davis, Mylo and Mae; four siblings: Deborah Polk of Pennsylvania, Jack (Renyce) Baldwin of Pennsylvania, Ronald Hatcher of New Jersey, and Thomas Hatcher of Florida; brother-in-law, Douglas (Nancy) Ziegler of Janesville; and mother-in-law, Gloria J. Ziegler of Janesville.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE: 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013, at Rotary Gardens, Janesville. The family will also host a celebration in Duluth this summer.
