St. Louis County officials kicked some tires and sharpened their pencils recently and then shook hands to buy 53 new vehicles for a cool $1.16 million, most of them from local dealerships.

On Tuesday the County Board’s Committee of the Whole approved the purchases from five Minnesota dealers, four of which are inside the county: Ranger GM in Hibbing, Duluth Dodge, Lundgren Motors in Eveleth, Hibbing Chrysler Center and Dodge of Burnsville.

In several cases the local prices were the lowest. But commissioners have a policy allowing them to pay up to $300 per vehicle higher than the lowest bid to keep each purchase within the county. County Board Chairman Chris Dahlberg said that rule cost taxpayers about $1,782 this round but led to more than 16 vehicles purchased locally and $200,000 of extra business for county dealerships.

The county’s Public Works Department got 28 of the new vehicles while the Sheriff’s Office got 20. The Lands and Minerals Department gets four new trucks and Property Management Department one new truck.

No word on whether the county opted for the rustproofing or not.
