A St. Louis County Public Works employee was arraigned Wednesday on a charge of knowingly possessing child pornography.

Bruce Robert Hosking, 63, of Brevator Township appeared before Judge Heather Sweetland in State District Court in Duluth on the felony charge.

   According to the criminal complaint:

A fellow employee reported to human resources that the image of a nude juvenile female showering was seen on Hosking’s work computer. The employee also said there were two other occasions in which images of preadolescent children dressed only in their underwear were seen on Hosking’s computer. The fellow employee reported seeing Hosking looking at the images.

A St. Louis County sheriff ’s investigator on Friday seized the defendant’s work computer. Five images of child pornography were found on the computer. The pornography appeared to include girls between the ages of 8and 12 engaged in sex acts with men.

After being read his Miranda rights, two sheriff ’s investigators interviewed Hosking. The defendant said he would get “pop ups” on his computer with video or photo attachments of children between the ages of 11 and 17 performing various sex acts. Hosking told the investigators that he had images of child pornography on a thumb drive that was taken from him when he was searched.

The complaint alleges Hosking admitted that he viewed child pornography on his work computer and that he knew the types of images he was viewing were “wrong.”

St. Louis County sheriff ’s deputies and the Lake Superior Forensic Technology and Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force took part in Hosking’s arrest at 7:20 a.m. Monday at the Richard H. Hansen Public Works Building, 4787 Midway Road.

A search warrant was executed at Hosking’s home, where additional evidence was found.

Hosking was hired by the county in April 1977. He is a survey Technician I in the Public Works Survey Division.

He remains employed by the county during an internal investigation, said Dana Kazel, St. Louis County communications manager.

Hosking applied for a public defender Wednesday, but Sweet-land ruled that he didn’t qualify for one. He was released from jail on $15,000 bail. The defendant couldn’t be reached for comment. His next hearing is scheduled for July 10.
