Lake County has received three citations from the Minnesota Occupational Safety and Health Administration in the death of Lee Roy Jacobson, with fines totaling more than $30,000.
Jacobson, a heavy-equipment operator for the county, died in May after the excavator he was operating fell into the east branch of the Beaver River, just north of Beaver Bay. Jacobson, 58, was clearing ice from a culvert at the time.
County Administrator Matt Huddleston said at Tuesday’s board meeting that the county contested the citations, and OSHA and the county are negotiating a settlement.
“We’re trying to make the best decision,” Huddleston said.
The accident was reported about 2:30 p.m. on April 30. A large group of emergency responders were called in to recover Jacobson’s body.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Lake County Search and Rescue, Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Northshore Mining and Silver Bay’s police department, fire department and public works division responded to the call.
Jacobson had worked for the county for about 10 years and was engaged to be married.
