I have watched with disgust the shabby treatment of female coaches at the University of Minnesota Duluth, from Shannon Miller and her assistant coaches in hockey to the rejection of the job offer made to women’s softball coach Jen Banford and her reasons for not accepting the position.
I have formed an opinion based on local news reporting and the reporting of the News Tribune that the current UMD sports department has no interest in women’s sports and only tolerates it as necessary.
I find it amazing that only female coaches are being terminated, especially when you consider how highly successful these programs have become under their leadership. As a father of five daughters and the proud grandfather to five granddaughters and four grandsons, I am sickened by the callous treatment that the women coaches have been forced to endure.
Therefore, I call for the termination of UMD Athletic Director Josh Berlo’s contract and suggest that UMD consider hiring Shannon Miller or some other qualified woman in his place to bring balance back to UMD sports. Berlo’s leadership has become a complete disaster for the advancement of women in sports.
